Spaceframe Chassis

This spaceframe represented the most significant departure from Staffordshire Uni Racing’s previous designs, incorporating major changes in geometry, load paths, and manufacturing detail. Built from T45 steel tubing, it was engineered to maximise torsional stiffness while remaining manufacturable within the team’s in-house facilities.

A key innovation was the introduction of a CNC-machined aluminium backplate, which improved drivetrain alignment and allowed for more consistent load transfer between assemblies. FEA-driven optimisation guided tube sizing and triangulation, ensuring compliance with FSUK safety regulations while reducing unnecessary weight.

As the team’s final full spaceframe before transitioning to a hybrid aluminium monocoque + steel rear design, this chassis marked a turning point. It balanced proven reliability with forward-looking ideas, setting the groundwork for the monocoque era and ultimately influencing the team’s best competitive results.
